Weekend Wrap up

The is weekend was full of new adventures, neighborhood improvements, late night travel, family reunions, cleaning and re-cleaning, and work, work , work.

Why do i do this to myself?? They were perfectly fine in the hot mess condition already.

There will never be enough time to complete this project. Just as there was never enough time to take down the january snowflakes that still hang from my ceiling. Yes, folks. Its still winter in some parts of the Emory household.

Rl decided to copy my actions and clean out boxes in the garage. In case you are unclear, those are dance costumes from the 80s and 90s.

I (along with a dedicated friend, she is on tv) decided to start a new business and i worked on that a bit.

And of course I scored spring amd Easter deals from target.

I just want to sit home all day in my pjs and organize and calculate my savings. Oh to my dream world.

Skin Care

Yes. I know this is a really random blog topic for me, but to be honest there hasnt been a lot of cooking are interesting things happening in my house lately!!

April and May are once again slam packed months. I realize that I put alot on myself, but it is all currently working and benefiting my family. That is how I feel today anyway.

Lets talk skin care. What does this mean? I have never been concerned with skin care, but then I got old. I did not like the face in the mirror. It looked tired, run down, and just yucky. This is the way I FEEL, its not suppose to be the way I LOOK!

First, I changed my makeup. That worked for a while, but then my yuck face came back. As I brainstormed with friends about how I can disguise the way that I feel and look like a young refreshed I have it all together mom, the question came up. What do you use to take care of your skin??

Huh? Ummmmm.....well, in the morning I wash my face with water before putting my new make up on (in the car....super safe, I know).  Then the accusations start flying...."you don't even wash your make up off before you go to bed!!!"  No people, that may push my bedtime to after 9 and ain't nobody got time for that.

I have now come to accept the fact that as I age I have to do things a little differently.  Take care of things that use to shine on their own, hide things that have never existed before, and remind myself that I am in my mid thirties and TIRED but nobody has to know.

Sooo...this is my new formula for operation disguise yuck face.  Awake facial cleanser by Younique (shameless plug).  I ordered this after reading rave reviews and I must say that it makes me happy.  I actually look forward to washing my face (at night).  It feels great and refreshing.  I highly recommend.

Next, night cream.  Now I am really accepting my age.  This is sold at Target and recommended by one of the blogs that I read "mix match mama".  I am happy with it so far.

Moisturizer before makeup.  Simple drugstore bottle.  Apparently this is key according to my friends.  Who knew?

I will say that I have seen a true difference in my previous yuck face.  I feel much better about it and look forward to staying consistent with my regimen.  Now, if I can only find a magic formula for these deep set dark circles underneath my eyes I may be ready for Hollywood!!

Easter Lunch - Budget Style

I am very traditional when it comes to my Easter Lunch.  Growing up, my family spent Easter service and lunch at my grandmothers house and we had the same meal each year.  There was a Christmas meal, Easter meal, New Years meal, etc.  There were similarities and differences to each.  Because my husband and kids are such big eaters, I have had to add a few items so that they are fully satisfied.

Here is my meal list:

Ham (Family bringing)
Salad (Family bringing)
Mashed Potatoes (topped with cheese)
Bean Bundles
Deviled Eggs (new)
Roasted Carrots (new)
Frozen Fruit Salad
Strawberry Shortcake

Here is list of a few things that I have been able to lower the cost by watching sales and thinking ahead:

Carrots - BOGO at Brookshires last week
Bean Bundles - Bacon BOGO at Brookshires last week - Beans Great Value
Mashed Potatoes - I have been collecting these small packs on sale and they are soooo delicious
Cheese - Sams
Eggs - 99cents at Walgreens this week
Strawberries - on sale at Brookshires for 2/$4 THIS week

I pull out the china and crystal for Easter Lunch because we are just so fancy like that.   Happy Easter Weekend! THE TOMB IS EMPTY! HE HAS RISEN!!

Minestrone

I had a meeting scheduled for last night, but it got cancelled at the last minute.  I had NOTHING prepared, scheduled, or thought of for dinner.  Searching through the pantry, I find my Bear Creek soup that does not require meat.  Score!  I simply followed the directions to make the soup.  I was craving mushrooms so a sauteed a few with salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar, and butter.  I also roasted baby carrots with red pepper flakes (sooooo addicting)

This was a simply, quick, and delicious meal for the family!!!!

I also want to give a shout out to my very BESTES friend in the whole wide universe.  She just had her 3rd baby in KOREA.  Yes, I said Korea.  They don't speak English, she has to use google translate to communicate, and she just popped out a baby.  My hero.

Isn't he cute!!!! However, he is currently nameless.  Lets pray about this together.

Low Carb

Okay, I have less than a couple of months before I hit the beach for my summer vacation.  Unfortunately, I am still holding a little weight from my 1 year old.  I am pretty sure that the stress of two kids has caused me to over indulge myself in all things pastry.  Spoonfuls of icing, king size candy bars, pasta pasta pasta, nachos...oh the nachos at 10:00 PM before bed.  Enough.  2 months and counting down.  Unless I plan to wear a maxi dress all week to cover up these hamhocks some call thighs, I got to get in shape!!!

Step 1: Low Carbs

I start with low carbs at dinner.  Pretty easy to do.  Lots of spinach salads and no pastas!!

Step 2:  Exercise?? Eeek.....I'm scared.  This is to be determined.

Step away from the Easter candy......

Let them see You

It's Monday and the beginning of another busy week.  Lots of Big Whit work to do and I'm already behind, our FIRST wee ball practice, empty fridge so must look for sales, I really need to cook something....anything this week, my FIRST mascara party on Friday, my FIRST training to lead at my new job, neighborhood party, birthday party, Landon's speech evaluation, Ruddick's Early Steps evaluation........seriously it's only Monday.

Did you realize that Easter is just two weeks away?? I have two weeks to get into the Easter spirit and attempt to teach my kids why we celebrate.  I found this idea AFTER Easter last year on pinterest and I have been waiting a whole year to try it.

An Easter tree and Resurrection Eggs.

Here is a link to the verses I will use for the Eggs.  I will choose my symbols as I go.  You can always use a printable picture as a back up if you can't find a tangible picture.

Coming off a tough weekend and going into another week, I spent some time trying to regroup myself this morning.  I want to share one my favorite songs that really helps to reset me and turn my focus to what is most important.

Self-Regulation

Every once in a while, I blog about child development.  It is one of my passions that I can never learn enough about.  Knowledge of child development does not equal perfect parenting.  Most of the time it doesn't even equal good parenting, but instead gives me the background to know all the things I mess up on day to day!! :)

Here are a few pieces of information to share today.  In today's world there is a HUGE push for school readiness.  No Child Left Behind, Common Enrollment, ALL kids ready to enter kindergarten with the tools to be successful.  YES it is important that we give our kids the foundation to succeed in an academic setting.  But is also just as important that kids are able to succeed socially and emotionally.  What does that mean? What does that look like?

Ask yourself a question.  How many people do you know that cannot read? Most likely not many or none.  Another question.  How many people do you know that cannot control their temper?  I bet you can name a few, right?!  The ability to control your emotions begins in early childhood and is called self regulation.

Even in infancy playing suspense games such as "I'm gonna getcha" and "Peekaboo" teach children how to regulate their emotions.  As they get older, parents should help identify the feeling for the child and validate that emotion.  "I know you're mad and that's okay".......from there we offer options of "safe ways" to be mad.  If they are throwing toys, give another choice like going outside and yelling.  Paying attention to how our children handle emotions are just as important as teaching ABCs.

What about handling my own emotions when the kids are out of control?!?  Let me tell you, my 1 year old is HARD.  I mean really hard.  From the time he was born, he struggled.  He was poked in the NICU for 7 days after birth (born a month early which probably disrupting his comfort in the womb).  Shortly after, he contracted RSV and struggled to breathe.  Then right back to hospital and poked again.  In his 14 1/2 month life he has been sick 75% of the time.  He has struggled.

Beyond his health, he is a hard kid.  His struggle in life has probably contributed to his high maintenance need for attention.  So many things have gotten in his way to safely explore the environment around him, therefore he is very particular on the way he wants his world to look.  This makes it hard for me as a parent to control my own emotion of frustration.  On most days, Ruddick cries more than he laughs.  Fortunately, I learned something new yesterday that has just been released in studies.  They way we respond to our kids in self proclaimed "distress" affects the brain!

Let me give a real life example taken from the Emory household.  Ruddick just threw himself on the floor for no reason and is now upset because he lightly touched his head on the rug.  He is crying loudly.  I, of course, pick him up and comfort him.  I am now holding him for the next 10 minutes trying to put him down every couple of minutes, but he kicks his legs and holds on to me tightly each unsuccessful try.  Well now I really have to go to the potty.  I'm going to have to put him down and listen to him cry.  As he cries I am constantly saying "Its okay", "Your okay", "I know, but your okay".  He doesn't respond and continues to get TICKED OFF.  Guess what happens....I get stressed and start saying "Ruddick....you.are.fine...It is O-KAY". Stress equals stress - parent to child.

New studies reveal that we should change our language.  Replace the natural tendency to say "It's okay" to "You Are Safe".  Much like we tell our kids when something is NOT safe, lets tell them when they ARE safe.  According to the studies, these words change the path of neurons in the brain. Interesting, right?  It also changes OUR stress level.  Say the phrase "You are Safe" a few times and try to say it in a more intense stressful type of voice.  It feels weird doesn't it?

So that is my challenge for myself and to whoever read this!! Try it out.....you are safe!
